Dan Bourke - Centre Manager
I have been working for Morgan’s since spring 2008 as a Body Combat instructor, and then following the completion of my degree was offered a position as combined fitness instructor that involved both working in the gym and studio environment. Since then I have made my way through the ranks to be Centre and Regional Manager of Morgan’s where I now lead the Truro centre.
Through my degree I completed the health and fitness route which covered Nutrition and Physical Activity with Special Populations. I have a huge passion in helping others to reach their full potential and personal goals.
I am looking forward to introducing the Spectra Red programme at Morgan’s in Truro, having successfully introduced and led the same programme in Plymouth. It is my hope that I can combine the Spectra Red weight-management programme with the walking group/club that I hope to get up and running this year.
My interests are anything that is active, whether it is walking, biking or off-roading in Landrovers, especially if it involves spending time with my family. As well as being qualified to take groups over the moors or around the countryside and coastal paths, I have done my mountain leader training, with only the assessment to go in order to be a full qualified mountain leader.

I was born in England but grew up in America, where I played American Football at Colligate Level. I have always loved sport having coached Football, Basketball and Baseball and being a Personal Trainer allows me to continue to expand my knowledge of issues such as weight loss and overall healthy living. Having battled with weigh issues most of my life, I can relate to others issues and I ensure I live what I preach to set a good example.
I am continuing my education in the fitness industry and will be going into Sports and Conditioning, Power Lifting, Olympic Lifts and S.A.Q. I believe in a variety of training methods and will use the best system for the goals and abilities of the individual.

I joined Morgan’s Well Being Centre because I wanted to get back to a gym environment. I have been working as the Head Instructor at a residential boot camp and I can’t wait until the outdoor courses are ready to go at Morgan’s, as I have found that getting people out and dirty really motivates them and makes exercise fun. Although I enjoyed the challenge of meeting different groups of people at the boot camp there was no continuity, I couldn’t see the changes in people’s body and self-confidence. However working at Morgan’s, the changes in people can be seen over the weeks and it has been most fulfilling to see clients bloom in self-confidence and renewed energy. This is what makes my job as a Gym Instructor/Personal Trainer well worthwhile. I am looking forward to continuing to see these changes in people that I come into contact with through my classes and in the gym and into being able to put my FdSc in Personal Training into practice over the next few months at Morgan’s.
I personally try to make my classes challenging and fun. Even I get it wrong sometimes and it is important to help people enjoy exercise so being able to laugh at yourself is extremely important. As a qualified Exercise to Music Instructor, I think it is important to make routines fun and easy to follow with a bit of a challenge in them. My Pilates classes are focussed on correcting posture, strengthening the core and helping people learn the art of relaxation. I also enjoy teaching strength and conditioning I was trained as a strength and conditioning coach through the Rugby Union. I have enjoyed putting my classes through their paces and even though these classes can be hard they are still enjoyable.
I would like in the future to be able to help people that suffer from obesity and depression with the aid of nutritional advice, a friendly ear and exercise. These are the things I have learnt from experience that will help them overcome their issues with their bodies and how they feel about themselves. This is something very close to my heart as I was a very large (size 22) and depressed female myself and it is hard to get people to understand why. I would also like to be able to put my knowledge from my BSc Sports Performance and Coaching degree into practice by being able to give fitness tests and performance programs to clients who want that little bit more out of the gym and who are thinking of competing in local events such as triathlons and half marathons as I train myself for triathlons. I would also like to set up Multi-Sports Club for children from ages 5 – 11 as I found this to be lacking in the local schools and was well attended when I did a trial run for my local community but funding dried up and the cost was too mu7ch for me and the parents to continue. I would also like to learn how to train children in the gym environment. So we can get them used to exercise early then the health issues that are becoming a problem for young adults may just go back into decline.

Karen Bourke - Fitness Instructor
I have always had a passion for helping people especially children, and therefore have always wanted a career where I could achieve this. Spending time in India working as a volunteer in a few different orphanages opened my eyes as to how different cultures live in conditions so different to ours in Britain.
After working with children in India and working with the elderly in care homes, I went to Marjon’s and studied Children Welfare and Society. During my time at Marjon’s I got introduced to fitness, the gym and especially the studio, where I took part in any classes that I could. I especially enjoyed Body Combat and Body Pump and this spurred me on to completing my Level 2 Fitness qualification. This in turn led me onto the Body Combat Instructor’s course and teaching Body Combat at Morgan’s. Next on the cards is the Body Pump course.
I am now studying for my Level 3 NVQ in Personal Training where I aim to learn and develop new skills to help drive my passion for helping people.
Qualifications
Diploma in Children Welfare and Society
National BTEC in Performing Arts
Level 2 YMCA Fitness Instructor
Les Mill Body Combat Instructor

I have been working in the industry for 11 years. I started off in personal training and sports therapy but took a direction change towards club management which I have been doing for the past 5 years. I came to Morgan’s with the aim of getting back to the elements of the job which I most enjoy such as being in the gym, teaching classes and practising my sports therapy. I have a background in professional rugby so sports specific training, weight training and injury rehabilitation are my main areas of interest, but I enjoy learning new theories and ideas and putting them into practice. I am currently on the Register of Exercise Professionals at Level 3 and my aim this year is to achieve my Level 4. I am looking forward to putting my knowledge and experience into use at such a well-equipped gym and working within a fantastic team where I can continue to learn from fitness professionals who have a wealth of knowledge in different areas.
In my spare time I enjoy going to the gym and I am hoping to start playing rugby again soon after a long layoff and watching movies.Qualifications
